Overview

BDOW! (formerly known as Sumo, rebranded after acquisition) is a lead generation tool that displays overlays and popups on websites to capture visitor email addresses for mailing list growth. Site operators embed a BDOW! script to show timed popups, exit-intent overlays, scroll-triggered boxes, and full-page welcome mats. The tool is widely deployed on content, e-commerce, and marketing sites where growing an email subscriber list is a primary objective.

What This Script Does

BDOW! loads a primary JavaScript file from its CDN (previously load.sumo.com, now BDOW!'s own infrastructure) that initializes the popup and form management system. This script handles display logic, trigger timing, and the form submission that sends captured email addresses to BDOW! servers or connected email service providers.

Cookies set by BDOW! include a visitor identifier to control popup frequency and prevent the same overlay from appearing on every page visit. A typical display frequency cookie persists for 30 to 90 days. A conversion tracking cookie may also be set to attribute email capture events to specific pages or campaigns, persisting for a similar period.

Client-side data collected includes page URL, referrer, session duration indicators, scroll depth (used to trigger scroll-based overlays), exit intent signals (mouse-leave events), and any data entered into the popup form (email address, name if collected). Email addresses submitted via the popup are transmitted to BDOW! servers and optionally forwarded to connected platforms such as Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or ActiveCampaign.

Consent & Compliance

Under GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, BDOW!'s display frequency cookies require prior opt-in consent from EU visitors because they persist on the device beyond the current session and are used for marketing optimization purposes. These cookies are not technically necessary for any essential website function.

The act of collecting email addresses via the popup form also constitutes the collection of personal data under GDPR. While the form itself may include its own consent checkbox (for email marketing opt-in), the BDOW! tracking cookies that fire before any form interaction still require separate cookie consent.

Under CCPA/CPRA, collecting email addresses from California residents constitutes the collection of personal information. Site operators must disclose this in their privacy policy. If BDOW! shares captured data with third-party platforms, this may constitute a sale or sharing of personal information requiring opt-out mechanisms.

Should You Block This Without Consent?

Yes. BDOW! sets persistent display frequency and conversion tracking cookies and collects visitor behavioral data (scroll depth, exit intent) before any form interaction.
