Overview
Pingdom is a website performance monitoring service (owned by SolarWinds) that provides uptime monitoring and Real User Monitoring (RUM). The RUM script measures actual page load times, resource loading performance, and error rates as experienced by real visitors. Metrics are reported to the Pingdom dashboard for performance analysis.
What This Script Does
- Captures page load timing data using the browser's Performance API
- Measures resource loading times for scripts, stylesheets, images, and API calls
- Records JavaScript errors and failed resource loads
- Sends performance metrics to Pingdom's servers for dashboard reporting
- May set cookies to correlate performance data across page navigations
- Collects browser, device, and geographic metadata alongside performance metrics
Consent & Compliance
Category: Analytics
Pingdom RUM is an analytics tool that collects performance data from real visitor sessions. While its purpose is operational (site reliability), it collects data from visitor browsers and may use cookies for session correlation.
- GDPR: Consent typically required. Collects data from visitor browsers and may process IP addresses for geographic reporting.
- CCPA: Qualifies as data collection. Must be disclosed in privacy policy.
- ePrivacy: Consent required if cookies are used for session tracking. If cookie-free, may operate under legitimate interest.
Should You Block This Without Consent?
Conditional. Pingdom RUM serves an operational monitoring purpose rather than marketing or behavioral analysis. If configured without cookies and with IP anonymization, it may qualify for legitimate interest under GDPR. With cookies enabled, block until analytics consent is obtained.
Is Pingdom GDPR compliant?
Pingdom typically loads analytics trackers, which are not strictly necessary for your site to work. Under the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, non-essential cookies and trackers must stay blocked until a visitor gives clear opt-in consent. So Pingdom can be fully GDPR compliant, but only if your site holds its scripts until consent is granted and lets visitors decline just as easily. Compliance depends on how your site loads Pingdom, not on Pingdom itself.
