Overview

Podium is a customer interaction platform combining review management, webchat, text messaging, and payment collection for local and multi-location businesses. When detected on a website, Podium's scripts embed a webchat widget for text-based customer communication and may deploy review solicitation tools that prompt visitors to leave reviews on Google, Facebook, or other platforms. The platform bridges website interactions with SMS-based customer communication.

What This Script Does

Podium embeds a webchat widget and review management tools on business websites.

• Webchat widget: A chat bubble renders on the page, allowing visitors to initiate text message conversations with the business. The visitor enters their phone number, and the conversation continues via SMS through Podium's messaging platform.
• Scripts loaded: Podium's widget script loads from Podium's CDN (connect.podium.com or similar), rendering the chat interface and review prompts
• Review tools: Review invitation widgets prompt customers to leave reviews on third-party platforms (Google, Facebook). These may appear as pop-ups, embedded forms, or post-purchase prompts.
• Cookies set: Session cookies for widget state management. Persistent cookies may track whether the visitor has been shown a review prompt or chat invitation, preventing repeated displays.
• Data collected: Phone numbers submitted through the webchat, chat conversation content (routed to SMS), review invitation interactions, and page URL context. The phone number is the primary identifier linking website interactions to ongoing SMS communication.
• Behavioral triggers: The widget can be configured to display proactively based on visitor behavior — time on page, scroll depth, or exit intent — monitoring behavior before the visitor initiates interaction.

Consent & Compliance

Under GDPR and ePrivacy, the webchat functionality serves a functional communication purpose when the visitor initiates it. However, proactive behavioral triggers that monitor visitor activity before interaction constitute non-essential tracking under the ePrivacy Directive. Review solicitation tools are marketing-oriented — prompting customers to create public content (reviews) that benefits the business's marketing. Cookies set for prompt frequency management are non-essential.

Under CCPA/CPRA, phone numbers and chat content collected through the widget constitute personal information. SMS marketing communication requires compliance with TCPA regulations and CCPA disclosure requirements.

Should You Block This Without Consent?

Conditional. If the webchat loads proactively with behavioral triggers and sets cookies before visitor interaction, block it until functional consent is granted. If the review solicitation tools are present, block those until marketing consent is granted. A click-to-load pattern for the chat widget (showing a static "Text Us" button that loads Podium's widget on click) avoids pre-interaction cookie exposure.
