Overview
Bettermode (formerly Tribe) is a community platform that enables businesses to build branded online communities — forums, knowledge bases, Q&A sections, ideation boards, and member directories — embedded on their websites or hosted on a Bettermode subdomain. When community widgets are embedded on a business's main website, Bettermode scripts render discussion threads, handle user authentication, and collect engagement activity from community participants.
What This Script Does
The Bettermode embed (loaded from bettermode.com or a custom domain) performs the following:
- Community widget rendering: Loads forum threads, Q&A sections, or knowledge base content within an embedded widget or iframe on the host page
- User authentication: Sets session cookies to maintain community member login state across page visits; returning members are automatically identified and shown personalized community content
- Content interactions: Records post views, upvotes, comments, and search queries within the community widget, transmitting these events to Bettermode's platform for engagement analytics
- Member identification: Links community activity to registered member accounts, building engagement histories per user
- Notification state: May store notification preferences and read/unread state in cookies or localStorage for returning members
Bettermode does not set advertising cookies or share member data with ad networks in its standard deployment.
Consent & Compliance
- Consent Category: Functional
- GDPR/ePrivacy: Session authentication cookies used to maintain community login state are functional and necessary for the service — without them, members cannot participate in the community. Community engagement data (posts, votes, interactions) is personal data processed under the membership relationship, governed by the Bettermode DPA and the community operator's privacy notice. Disclose Bettermode as a data processor.
- CCPA: Member engagement data is personal information under CCPA. Bettermode acts as a service provider.
Should You Block This Without Consent?
No. Bettermode's community widget serves a direct functional purpose at the member's request — participating in a community. The authentication session cookies are strictly necessary for community access. Ensure a DPA is in place with Bettermode and that your privacy notice covers community data collection.
